What is robotic surgery?

How we perform surgery has changed significantly in the last 40 years.  New approaches, typically described as "minimally invasive surgeries," offer patients less pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and better surgical outcomes. Almost every patient who needs surgery (for non-cancer and cancer-related reasons) will benefit from a minimally invasive approach.  Commonly performed minimally invasive surgeries involve the gallbladder, colon, thyroid, adrenal glands, stomach and esophagus.

For a long time, minimally invasive was synonymous with "laparoscopic surgery." However, now almost every laparoscopic surgery can be done more effectively - and with less recovery time -  as a robotic surgery.

Robotic surgery is a specific kind of minimally invasive surgery in which the surgeon uses a "robot" or machine to improve his or her ability to see and manipulate surgical instruments with precision.  Currently, the da Vinci robot, produced by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., is the only one FDA approved to perform the surgeries described on this website.

Hello, I'm Dr. Amit Gogia.

I am a minimally invasive surgeon and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I have extensive experience treating hernias and disorders of the gallbladder, thyroid, and colon laparoscopically and robotically. Before joining Bon Secours Surgical Specialists of Richmond in 2006, I completed residency training in general surgery at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia.

It can be frightening to hear that you need surgery. I do my best to make the experience as easy and positive as possible: I explain every option (surgical and non-surgical), involve families and friends as actively as you wish,  and communicate frequently with your other care providers. We - me, you, and your other care providers - work as a team to make sure you  receive the best care available.

I have always been dedicated to minimally invasive surgical approaches, because I know they lead to better short-term and long-term outcomes for you. That's why I was the first surgeon in Virginia to offer robotic repair of a complex hernia.  It's why I take time out of my busy surgical practice to teach other surgeons around the country to do the same.

If you would like to schedule a consultation, you can call my office at 804-417-1432 or complete the form below.  My nurse will be in touch to schedule your appointment within the next business day.  I look forward to working with you.

Robotic Procedures in Detail

  • Component Separation (Complex Hernia Repair). Complex hernia repairs involve fixing the hernia by moving the abdominal wall muscles back to their original position.  This approach is required for large or complex abdominal wall hernias that cannot be resolved with simple suture or mesh. Traditional (non-robotic) laparoscopic approaches cannot be used to perform complex hernia repair.  However, I am the first surgeon in Virginia and one of the few in the country to perform this surgery  regularly with the robot.
